Granite is Too Expensive Our starting costs for granite including tax, installation, straight cuts, sink cutouts & basic edge range between $60 - $70. That's better than most engineered products.
Granite Scratches Easily ANY surface scratches, but - like diamonds - the best way to scratch granite is with ... granite. The acrylic base used in most engineered stones will usually scratch with a pocket knife & some pressure.
I Can't Place Hot Pans on Granite Granite can handle temperatures in excess of 1000°. Engineered stones are certified for 500°.
It's Too Much of Hassle to Seal Granite If you can operate a non-aerosol spray bottle and wipe up with paper towels, you're qualified to seal granite. It's easier than your bathroom mirror.
Granite Will Stain. With today's sealers (see above) granite is the gold-standard for kitchens, floors, vanities, fireplaces, etc.
Granite is Porous and Grows Bacteria While bacteria are hearty, most do require certain things to grow; oxygen, water, nutrients & substrate. (Think Petri dish from science class.) The minerals that granite is made of are toxic to bacteria and deny them a place to thrive. That said, food-borne bacteria such as salmonella can live on ANY surface and proper precautions should be taken no matter what material you choose.
